Why Austria?

Austria is located in Central Europe, with a rich history in art, culture, literature, and philosophy. Austria is one of the “best cities” considering cultural capitalization, like, home to 9 UNESCO World Heritage Sites which include Salzburg’s Historic Center, Vienna’s Historic Center, and the Palace and Gardens of Schönbrunn. Sharing a border with eight different countries, Austria has been a significant junction for many economic and cultural regions. With the musical capitalization of the world, Vienna, as it is the capital of Austria is the perfect destination for those who want to walk the streets of legendary composers such as Beethoven, Schubert, Mozart, and of great minds such as Freud. Although acclaimed for its musical and architectural history it has something to offer for all international students in Austria.

Higher Education System

Before starting to study in Austria, it is necessary to pass a competitive examination. The university system in Austria falls under the Bologna Process within the European Higher Education Area. This cooperation represents a movement which leads to the ease of mobility and employability within its 47 member countries. With over 39 public, private, and teacher training schools, studying in Austria provides a very unique experience for students in a foreign higher education system. International students in Austria have the opportunity to study in specialized universities. Although classical universities do exist there is also an option to enter to the universities such as Universities of College & Teacher Education, Universities of Applied Sciences, or Universities of the Arts. Each school allows the residents and the international students in Austria to study under a curriculum that focuses on professional-orientated education by having the following points:

  • 3 years program to get Bachelor’s degree
  • 1-2 year programs to get a Master’s degree
  • Mandatory units for career-training
  • Mandatory work based internships
  • A Bachelor degree in conjunction with a teaching qualification
Although there are programs that offer courses in English, some may require proof of German proficiency.

Living & Studying in Austria

The academic years in Austria has two semesters: winter and summer. The academic year begins around October 1st and ends around September 30th of the following year.

For Universities and Universities of Arts there is a 720€ fee per semester. Private universities have higher tuition rates which can differ from one to another.

It is recommended to have between €710 to €800 for monthly living costs such as accommodation, food, studies, and personal expenses.

Austria’s low tuition costs, concentration on promoting German proficiency, diverse university programs, and rich landscape and culture, clearly answer the question of, “Why studying in Austria?”

It should also be mentioned that international students in Austria have the permission to work 120 full days (8 hours per day) or 240 half days (4 hours per day) per year. This will allow students to cover their financial needs for rent, health insurance, food and their hobbies.
